Black Sox Scandal

s World Series stats tell an important part of story. He set a record that still exists today with the most hits in a series. He led both teams in hitting with a .375 average, including the only homerun of the series. Joe was able to score from first on a single, which was the winning run in a 5-4 game. ?Shoeless? Joe fielded flawlessly by handling 30 balls in the outfield and never made an error or allowed a man to take an extra base. He continued his defensive skills by throwing out five men at home plate. Joe Jackson went on trial and was acquitted of all charges. During the trial he gave testimony of the facts about his involvement in the Black Sox Scandal. Joe Jackson was approached on two occasions and offered money to throw the World Series. Twice he refused. On a third occasion, $5,000 was thrown down at ?Shoeless? Joe. He didn?t return it but he asked Charles Comiskey to hold the money. However, Comiskey wouldn?t hold he money. Joe asked to be benched for the series but his request was refused. Bill Burns, the gambler, testified that he never talked to Joe about the fix. Teammate, Lefty Williams, swore he never received permission to use his name with the fixes. Commissioner Landis committed contempt of court by going against the courts ruling and banishing Joe from baseball. In 1924 Joe brought a civil suit against Comiskey for back wages. This was the second jury to hear his story and find him innocent. Landis again refused to lift his lifetime banishment.
