The Fulbright Program

l pioneer who died in 1902. Cecil Rhodes had gone to South Africa in the latter nineteenth century and made a fortune from diamond mining. In 1902 he created an endowment enabling a total of 57 students, 20 from the colonies, 32 from the United States and 5 from Germany, to spend two or three years at Oxford University with the hope of familiarizing future leaders of these countries with the values and culture of England. At the time of its inception the program was unprecedented in scale as well as vision. Cecil Rhodes set forth a set of criteria for selection in his Will. Although high academic achievement and intellectual distinction were prerequisites they were not sufficient for receiving this distinguished award. Rhodes also expected beneficiaries of this program to have integrity of character, a spirit of unselfishness, respect for others, potential for leadership and physical vigor.H. G. Merriam, who later guided the University of Montana to offering a degree in creative writing, and Robert Preston Brooks, Professor of Economics and later dean of the UGA School of Commerce were among the first class of American Rhodes Scholars in 1904. Edwin Hubble, a famous astronomer was among the class of 1910 and J.W. Fulbright, who later became a U.S. senator and passed the Fulbright Act joined the Rhodes Scholars of the class of 1925.
