Although most ifnot all of the Roman writings that still exist today, that were produced by the Roman writers,were based in some part on the Homeric Greek style of writing. One major difference appearedbetween the Greeks and Romans in the literacy department, the common people of Rome neverattained the high plane of literacy that the Athenians did.10 One major reason for that was thefact that most of the literacy works were written in Greek, and had to be translated into Latin. Many of the texts translated into Latin was done by the Roman philosopher Cicero (106 - 143 A.D.) during his translation of Greek texts into Latin. He created a more flexible and sophisticatedtype of Latin language. Ciceros Latin became the model for western Europes use of letter andwas used as standard language in Renaissance Europe and is still widely taught today. Plauies andTerence were two very significant Roman playwrights, basically the only two playwrights thatRome produced. They where very similar in to the Greek in the style. They wanted to simulatethe writing style of Homer and other great Greek writers. One of the most noted writers to comeout of Rome was Vergil ( 70 - 19 B. C.). Vergil was a famous Roman poet that wrote TheAeneid, this was modeled after Homers The Odyssey.
