BELOVED

r, becoming very protective andcovering for her by changing her soiled sheets. As for Beloved, all of her affectionis for Sethe. She is constantly trying to convince Sethe to talk about her past- abouther mother, her earrings, her time at Sweet Home. Where Denver failed, Belovedsucceeded, and Sethe would share her memories for Beloveds entertainment. While Sethe and Beloved become closer, Paul D. senses that something isstrange and begins to wonder where Beloved has come from. This comes fromfeeling that Beloved is contaminating his ideal family situation. One night at dinner, Paul D. asks Beloved how she got to 124. She replies that she walked, but her Paulsees that her shoes are brand new and do not show signs of a long walk. Belovedbecomes very upset, crying and choking on her food. Sethe comes to her rescueand tells Paul D. to stop it. after that, Paul D. begins sleeping on the rocker in thekitchen at night. He then moves to Baby Suggs bed and finally ends up in thestorehouse. He is feeling that Beloveds presence is pushing him out of the house. One night while Paul D. is in the storehouse, Beloved visits him and has sex withhim. Paul D. feels incredible guilt and tries to tell her about it but cant. Instead hetells her that he wants her pregnant. A while later, Someone at the hog plant PaulD. worked at told him that Sethe was keeping a secret. When he confronted her shetold him the story of killing her daughter. This is more than Paul D. can bear and heleaves 124.After Paul D. is gone, Sethe begins spoiling the girls like never before. Shespends all of her savings buying colorful cloth and lace and ribbons. She stays laterand later every morning cooking breakfast, which angers her employer, a mannamed Mr. Sawyer who owned a local tavern. One night Sethe notices that Belovedhas a scar that resembles the one that killed her daughter. She then realizes thatBeloved is her daughter and that she has b...
