Sethe hasbecome small and weak from Beloveds presence and beloved grew large fromconsuming Sethe. Denver visits Lady Jones, the Bodwins housemaid, and asks forwork . While there, she tells Ms. Jones about Beloved and what is happening toher mother. In the days that followed, food began to arrive at the door of 124. Itwas a show of support from the community, the same community that alienatedSethe after the incident involving Mr. Bodwin. The women of the area did not thinkit would be right to let the ghost of a baby kill its mother, even if the mother hadtaken its own. Sethe was determined to make things right this time. The more Sethe gave, the more Beloved would take. The more Beloved took, the more Sethe would talkabout how she would do anything for her children. Beloved did not accept this andtold Sethe that she left her behind. Sethe begged for forgiveness, explaining thatshe had planned for them to cross over to the other side together. This did notmatter to Beloved- Sethe had left her and now she was going to pay for it. Oneday, Denver had made plans to go and work for Mr. Bodwin, and Mr. Bodwinvolunteered to come and pick her up. Just as Mr. Bodwin was arriving, a group oflocal women were gathering outside 124 in an effort to excorsize Beloved from it. The chants and singing of the women drew Sethe and Beloved out onto the porch. Sethe had been splitting ice and was holding an ice pick. When Sethe saw Mr.Bodwin for the second time she still thought it was schoolteacher, but were actionswere quite different, she ran toward Mr. Bodwin with the ice pick raised and sworethat no one would take her baby away from her again.
