We also relish thecomfort of air conditioning and the convenience ofairline travel because scientists and inventors havemade crucial mental connections to create theseproducts and conveniences in the name of hopefulprofits. Most people recognize the right of a scientist orengineer to be free to ask questions, to pursue newideas, and to create new innovations. However, at thesame time, people tend to ignore the third essentialman to human progress: the business man. The businessman is the one who takes the achievements of thescientists and engineers and turns them into reality. There is a process of natural inquiry which isevery bit as important as that of the scientist orinventor behind the activities of the business man. The business man must find and train workers who arecapable of producing a quality product. He mustdetermine how to make the product affordable by cuttingcosts. He must decide how best to market anddistribute his product so that it reaches its potentialconsumers as well as how to finance his venture in away that will promote future growth. All of theseissues are dependent upon the mind of the business man. If he is not left to think freely, his venture may losemoney and the product may go out of existence. It isimportant that the business man have a high degree ofdedication to free thought not only to solve theseproblems, but also in dealing with employees,investors, and customers. He must persuade suppliers,employees, and investors that his product will be aprofitable one. Otherwise, his investors will taketheir money elsewhere, the best employees will seekbetter opportunities, and the suppliers will look formore credit worthy customers. The only way to respect this virtue of thededication to free thought is to leave the individualfree to act upon his own judgment. This is whatcapitalism does.
