She then proceeds to try and argue, but Julian stops her. He mutters, “Shut up, and enjoy it” (O’Connor 180). This comment just heads off the next point his mother can argue. Then she says, “With the world in the mess it’s in, it’s a wonder we can enjoy anything. I tell you, the bottom rail is on the top” (O’Connor 180). Julian doesn’t comment, he just sighs.
