This comment irritated Julian and opened the doorway to yet another topic. Julian told her, “There are no more slaves” (O’Connor 181). She responded by saying that she thought that they were better off the way they were. When she made that comment, Julian could tell that she was going to start on the racial topic. He tried to tell her to get off of the subject, but she would not leave it alone. She proceeded to say how she felt sorry for the ones who were half white and wondered if they had mixed feelings. Julian responded by telling her that he had mixed feelings now, although he was white. She then tried to switch the conversation to something more pleasant and started to talk about her childhood. She began to talk about Grandpa’s house and all the smells it had and how her grandfather paid the mortgage for the God highs. As she continued talking about her childhood, she started talking about her child hood nurse. “And I remember the old darky who was my nurse, Caroline. There was no better person in the world. I’ve always had a great respect for my colored friends” (O’Connor 182). She began to tell Julian how she would do anything for them when he stopped her. Will you for God’s sake get off that subject” (O’Connor 182)? They started to argue about how they were acting and feeling that night as they waited for the bus. As they waited, Julian pulled off his tie and this sparked another argument. Julian’s mother felt that he did this to embarrass her. He told her, “If you’ll never learn where you are, you can at least learn where I am” (O’Connor 182). She responded, “You look like a-thug” (O’Connor 182). He then said, “T...
