He replied by letting her know that no one on the bus cared who she was. “I care who I am,” She replied icily (O‘Connor 182).. The bus finally arrived and they got on. Julian’s mother looked around and commented to a whit lady, “I see we have the bus to ourselves” (O’Connor 183). The lady agreed and proceeded to tell her, “I come on the other day and they were thick as fleas-up front and all through” (O’Connor 183). Julian’s mother and the woman talk about the weather and their son’s educations and jobs. As the women talked, Julian began to daydream. He was shaken out of his dream, when the bus stopped and a Negro got on. The man was well dressed and carried a briefcase. He found a seat and hid himself behind a newspaper. Julian’s mother then elbowed him in the ribs and said, “Now you see why I won’t ride on these busses by myself” (O’Connor 185)? As the man sat down, the whit woman next to him got up and moved. Julian‘s mother gave her a look of approval. Julian then got up and he sat next to the gentleman. This made his mother very upset. He tried to spark up a conversation with the Negro, but he could not find anything to say. He asked him for matches, but then he realized that there was no smoking allowed on the bus, so he gave them back and apologized. Julian’s mother was so mad, that her face turned red.
