y this gives us a feel that the crowd are agitated and restless, also this situation must make Ed feel like he is being undermined as this is all that his effort in the leaflets is worth. Also, the dwellers look like they have little confidence in Ed’s ability. The hall looks very realistic; the mise-en-scene includes American flag and folk looking very authentic in cowboy hats and the like.All the while, there is something that goes unnoticed by the viewers. This is the very innovative and shrewd camera work. In all of the shots where we are looking at Ed, we see him from the perspective of the audience when we are looking up to him and feeling that he is responsible for us. This also gives us a feeling of vulnerability, after all, this must be what the residents are feeling as Ed’s firm is liable for the fortunes of all these sick and diseased individuals.As we look at the camera work more closely, we notice that all of our views are from the viewpoint of either the general public, Ed’s view or Erin’s who is lingering at the back of the hall.This tells us that we are, from Ed’s point of view, looking down at the public. I believe that this is quite significant, it is one of a few points in the film that we can tell that Ed isn’t really among these people like Erin. Another instance of this was when Ed and his counterpart go to see one of their cases and Ed seems uneasy. When offered a cup of coffee he declines, this is not very good etiquette. Erin snaps at him and says, “just have a cup of *censored*ing coffee”. Ed then revises his decision and begins to gain the trust of his clients.As we look at Erin through a new light though we seem to be on her eye-level, thus telling that she is neither being looked up to, or down on. Usually she would just be another bystander being looked down on. But, in a situation that is new to her she has risen above her fellow public, but doesn’t ye...
