Reminding us of when we were boys and climbed trees to see beautiful sights.Hands in the dark andA riversideRound breasts risingWith the fingers tideHere is an observation of the body of the hazel-eyed lady, compared to that of the tide rising over moonlight. She was plump as a finch And live as a salmon Gay as silk Proud as a BrahmanHere is a continuation of the description of the woman. Describing her plump torso and the liveliness she presents herself with. We learn about the happiness she displays and the confidence in which she walks with. They winked when they met And laughed when they parted Never took time To be brokenheartedThis stanza is about the brief encounter the two shared. By sharing a wink when they met, and a giggle at their departure, it tells us that there was an obvious attraction between the two strangers. Despite their attraction, the two “Never took the time to be broken hearted”. They did not take a chance at love. Perhaps they didn’t take the chance because they were afraid of rejection, or becoming attached only to be hurt. It is a common fear that we as humans unfortunately share. But no man sees Where the trout lie now Or what leans out From the hazel boughAs the woman walks away, and the chance meeting is over passed, the man will no longer see the woman’s trout like liveliness. Nor her hazel eyes, nor little plush feet. The feeling of looking over the hazel bough will follow him forever as he passed up a chance of love because fear of heartbreak. My interpretation of this poem was a lost opportunity for love and happiness. But I also see how this poem could have been interpreted differently. Perhaps “No man sees where the trout lie now” because the man ran back to her ...
