By utilizing a flexible benefits package employees are able to choose those benefits that are best suited to their individual needs, Incentive pay plans can be advantageous to both the employer as well as the employee. The success of any incentive pay plan depends on the organizational climate in which it must operate, employee confidence in it and its suitability to employee and organizational needs. Importantly, employees must view the incentive plan to be equitable and related to their performance, Performance measures should be quantifiable, easily understood, and bear a demonstrated relationship to organizational performance.Health and Safety is another issue that is prevalent in the work place. Safely involves protecting employees from injuries caused by work related accidents. Health refers to employees freedom from physical or emotional illness(pg.460). The most important federal legislation in the safety and health area is Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) of 1970. The purpose of this act is to assure a safe and healthful workplace for every American Worker(pg. 461). In general, coverage of the Act extends to all employers and their employees in the 50 states. The District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and all other territories under federal government jurisdiction. Coverage is provided either directly by OSHA or through an OSHA approved state occupational safety and health program. As defined by the Act, an employer is any person engaged in a business affecting commerce who has employees, but does not include the United States or any state or Political subdivision of a state(AllBusiness.com).
