Policy Analysis on the Maryland Against Handgun Abuse Program

s stance on defending the second amendment. Supporters of the NRA usually include gun owners, while people affected by gun violence, the anti-gun lobby, and the news and the media tend to oppose the NRA. Throughout its history the NRA has remained committed to defending the second amendment of the constitution. The NRA’s programs have been effective in educating people on firearms safety. The problem defined by the MAHA and other organizations fighting similar causes, is the abuse of guns in our society. The efforts of the MAHA are to effectively manage guns to reduce the number of crimes reported each year. According to the MAHA’s website, more than 1,400 people are accidentally shot and killed each year. The MAHA says, “if guns made us safer, we’d be the most safest nation in the world with more than 211 million guns for 250 million people.” The issue of gun control is that gun ownership is a fundamental right protected by a 200-year document. This document being the constitution of the United States states, “ a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state the right of the people to bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The main contributor in gun violence being higher in one city or another is the availability of the firearm. So, with this in mind, the main goal of the MAHA is to produce stricter gun laws to limit the accessibility that children and criminals have to guns. The manifest goal of the MAHA is, “The reduction of violence through educating the public about the hazards of gun ownership and misuse, and through advocating reasonable handgun controls.” The ideal goal of this program would be to limit all access to guns, because people with guns kill people far more frequently and effectively than those with out guns.
