MAHA is comprised of thousands of Marylanders working with a common mission. The power base of the MAHA is its volunteers and the residents of the state of Maryland. Residents contribute by writing letters to legislators and media personnel, making donations, and hosting presentations given by the MAHA. The program is intact to reduce handgun violence so many people wouldn’t oppose this program. Over the past decade and a half the policy has stood behind the stricter gun laws that have been passed in Maryland. The MAHA has been successful in the education and the helping of passing legislation. For instance, in 1989 the MAHA helped pass legislation instituting a 7-day waiting period for the purchase of assault weapons. Another met goal was in 1991 when the program embarked on a highly publicized education campaign to protect Maryland children from becoming victims of accidental shootings. In conclusion, the program since its establishment in 1986 has been an over all success. The program as a whole wishes more of the legislation they lobby would be passed, but they have to be realistic. Maryland holds some of the strictest gun laws in the United States.
