He had the desire to become a lucky person to help his mother in the economic situation his family was going trough. Paul wanted to take his father position because he was not a lucky person. Paul desire was to give all the luxuries to his mother so he can get affection and love from his mother.Uncle Oscar arrived to the house and sees Paul riding his rocking horse and said "Aren't you growing too big for a rocking-horse? You're not a very little boy any longer, you know."(301) His mother tells him this is a manner of scolding and to make him stop his furious rides because there was something strange about his hard riding as he was doing so. Giving mysterious look as he always did his uncle found out that he knows about horse races and that he would gather around Bassett and spends most of his time with him. Bassett is a gambler and that's how Paul got to know so much about horse races and also the names of them such as Mirza, Daffodil, SanSovino, and Malabar. Paul's mother had told him that his uncle was a lucky men. One day uncle Oscar found out how Paul was gambling the money he had given to him. Uncle Oscar knowing of his nephew desire of horses decides to take him to the horse races.The Lincoln Downs Races were not only an experience for Paul but also a motivation to keep gambling. This eventually got Paul more addicted to the vicious game. "If you'd like to be a partner, uncle, with Bassett and me, we could all be partners. Only, you'd have to promise, honour bright, uncle, not to let it go beyond us three. Bassett and I are lucky, and you must be lucky, because it was your ten shillings I started winning with..." (303). Uncle Oscar and his nephew gained confidence in each other and Paul knew that he could trust his uncle and ask him to join him and Bass...
