Mercutio back from fighting Tybalt, then the outcome of thestory would have changed. Enraged by Romeo’s appearance at a Capulet party, Tybaltapproached Romeo at a public place in Verona and told him to draw his sword. Romeo, however, would not fight and friend, Mercutio stepped in. In the fighting, Romeo holdsMercutio back, in an attempt to prevent the fight. However, the result was the death ofMercutio by Tybalt, which eventually, led to the murder of Tybalt by Romeo. Inmurdering Tybalt, Romeo was banished from Verona. Hearing of this, Lady Capuletcomes up with idea to marry Juliet sooner to Paris in an attempt to heal her sorrow overTybalt. Although, Lady Capulet had a good intent, this only worsened the problem athand. Because of this, the Friar needed to come up with a quick plan in order to preventthe marriage of Juliet and Paris. In fact, Juliet even threatened to kill herself if she were tobe married to Paris. As Juliet emphatically states about marrying Paris, “Tell me not, friar, that thou hear’st of this,Unless thou tell me how I may prevent it.If, in thy wisdom, thou canst give no help,Do thou but call my resolution wise,And with this knife I’ll help it presently. ... Give me some present counsel; or behold, ‘Twixt my extremes and me this bloody knife ... Be not so long to speak; I long to die,If what thou speak’st speak not of a remedy.”(IV.i.50-67)In response to this, the Friar suggested a sleeping potion as a last resort. As you know, the result was Romeo hearing of Juliet’s death, causing his suicide. This, in turn, led toJuliet’s suicide. So, as you can see, if Romeo had not held Mercutio back, Mercutio maynot have been killed, therefore Romeo would not have killed Tybalt, causing hisbanishment.
