ROMEO AND JULIET

ution to thismarriage. Another example of the change in the outcome of the story is if a particularservant wasn’t illiterate. If the servant with the responsibility of distributing invitations to a party was ableto read, then the outcome of the story would have changed. A servant was given a list ofguests whom are invited to attend the grand party at the Capulet’s house, but the servantcannot read. Fortunately, Romeo and Benvolio (Romeo’s cousin) are passing, and theservant asks for Romeo’s help. For their help, the servant invited them to join the party, only if they were not Montagues.“Now I’ll tell you without asking. My master is thegreat rich Capulet ; and if you be not of the house ofMontagues, I pray come and crush a cup of wine.”(I.ii.78-81)Romeo and Benvolio decided to take the servant up on this offer, despite his warning. Obviously, if Romeo hadn’t attended the party he might have never met Juliet. If he hadnot met Juliet none of the events in the play would have happened. Most importantly, thedeath of Romeo, Juliet, Paris, and Tybalt. So, as you can see, if the servant was able toread, then Romeo and Benvolio may never have known about the party. In conclusion, there are several points in the play where things could have turnedout differently if certain coincidental events had not occurred. This is clearly shown in thepreceding incidents explained. Consequently, if the misfortune that held a critical letterfrom reaching Romeo never existed, if Romeo didn’t hold Mercutio back from fightingTybalt, and if the servant with the responsibility of distributing invitations to a party wasable to read, then the outcome of the story would have changed....
