Although the doctor had warned them not to become pregnant again, in the fall LaBelleza became pregnant by accident. Their doctor who, was an atheist, advised them toget rid of the baby or it would kill La Belleza. The village priest advised Juan and LaBelleza to keep the baby. He told them that it would be a sin to kill the baby and that theycould not kill it. Although it was a tough decision, they decided to kill the child. Whenthe child was torn from the womb of La Belleza Juan saw that the child was a boy he grewvery sad and he cursed everything, including God. This was one of the biggest reasonsthat Juan was depressed and resentful. After the way his son was brutally taken from LaBelleza’s womb, Juan had himself tied by the atheist doctor. He did this so that he wouldnever put La Belleza in danger again. After the summer was over Juan and La Belleza moved up to the mountains. Juanand La Belleza were very happy together in spite the obvious tension between Juan andthe townspeople. They were obviously not wanted in the California Mountains. Despiteof everything this was Juan and La Belleza’s most happy time. When Juan and La Belleza Had been in their sixth year of marriage somethingmiraculous happened. La Belleza became pregnant once again. Juan prayed to God thatthe passage of La Belleza would open. The first five months were good, but things startedto go bad in her sixth month of pregnancy.
