. They saved -3-the child, which was his son Jesus, but they could not Save La Belleza.Because of all the tragedy that Juan Sanches endured in his life he could not takethe pain of seeing his son take it all for granted. When Juan Sanches returned to TwinPines from the Flotill he pushed his blue Ford, that he had worked so hard for, over a cliff. Juan burned anything of value to him. He was so depressed over his son’s situation thathe even burned La Belleza’s things. The things that he had always kept for sentimentalvalue. Juan was most disappointed in Jesus because he was very naive. Juan wasdepressed because he felt that he failed as a father, but in a way he was also happy becausehe felt liberated. He had nothing to live for anymore. This is evident when Juan says,“Jesus. Ah, Jesus. Jesus the American. Jesus the Flotill. Jesus understood nothing. Jesus, he believed, was forever lost to knowledge. That day with Jesus had been his ownliberation” (160). By Juan burning all of his possessions he came to a realization that love hadalways been in his life. Disguised in the sun and the wind, and even God. It was asthough Juan was not depressed anymore. The last paragraph of the story is, “Believingthat he had perished in the flames, several of the townspeople placed a marker next to thegrave of his wife with his name on it. But , of course, on that score they were mistaken. Juan Sanches had simply gone home” (160). Juan Sanches died and went home with hiswife. The home that he had been searching for his entire life.In conclusion Juan Sanches it is evident that Juan Sanches is depressed because ofhis son’s situation, but also that the life he led also had a part in his depression. Juan had avery sad and depressing life.
