He had nothing to live for anymore. This is evident when Juan says,“Jesus. Ah, Jesus. Jesus the American. Jesus the Flotill. Jesus understood nothing. Jesus, he believed, was forever lost to knowledge. That day with Jesus had been his ownliberation” (160). By Juan burning all of his possessions he came to a realization that love hadalways been in his life. Disguised in the sun and the wind, and even God. It was asthough Juan was not depressed anymore. The last paragraph of the story is, “Believingthat he had perished in the flames, several of the townspeople placed a marker next to thegrave of his wife with his name on it.
