rationally, but his problems are simply too emotional for a rational solution. However, Hamlet cannot understand this concept and, accordingly, as he struggles to free himself from his “psychological prison”, he only intensifies his degree of suffering. But when Hamlet finally realizes that he will die regardless of what happens, he is able to think much more clearly and no longer suffers the burden of entrapment that has plagued his mind since he first arrives in Demark. His mind is much less troubled and he no longer seems to have worries as to what will happen in the future. This allows Hamlet to focus on his present reality, which helps him immeasurably. Accordingly, it is his decision to truly face death, not just think about it, that ultimately changes him. After he does this he is able to choose the path that will lead him to peace with himself and resultantly send him to heaven.The reconciling of Hamlet’s head and heart, borne in the acceptance of his own mortality, is most vividly depicted in the final scene of the play, when Hamlet agrees to participate in the duel with Laertes. This is precisely when he decides exactly what he is to do in order to escape his “psychological prison” and, now having come to accept his own mortality, has no difficulty in acting upon his decisions. At this point, Hamlet is very calm and seems to exude a profound aura of confidence. This new mindset is very evident in his conversation with Horatio. Horatio expresses concern that Laertes will win, but Hamlet, no longer a slave to his passions, feels that he will undoubtedly triumph:“I shall win at the odds.But thou wouldst not think how ill all’s hereabout my heart; but it is no matter.” (V.ii.210-211).This clearly shows that Hamlet has achieved a much more stable mindset.
