any form is wrong, but it still extends into schools, as well as the home. Students in school as well as out are persons under our Constitution. They are possessed of fundamental rights which the state must respectit can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their Constitutional right to freedom of speech at the schoolhouse gate (Caution, 54)Abe Fortas states in the above quote that the Constitutions rights do not end once you enter the school, nor do they not include persons under the age of eighteen. However, censorship affects schools and the students attending them in many ways. School administrators have a responsibility to keep the students within their establishment safe, however sometimes they can go too far. Some people believe children are to be seen and not heard. This belief carries into schools at some times. Conflicts between students and teachers are inevitable, but dont students have a right to defend themselves and what they believe? This writer believes so, however, some school personnel would disagree. They believe that it is best for a student not to argue with the teacher, to just let it be; but if a teachers comment contradicts that which you have been taught, one would think that the right thing to do would be to speak up. Students are being punished almost everyday for things such as this, but are not allowed to tell their side of the story. Dress codes are also a form of censorship in schools. We have a right to freedom of expression. Today, many schools force the students to wear uniforms. Such uniforms include blue or black jeans with a white shirt that has a collar. There are some schools that allow the students to wear what they choose, with certain restrictions. At Liberty high School, students may not wear shorts, however on game days cheerleaders and other organizations are allowed to wear their very short-skirted uniforms.
