stepped in and basically said we had to buy Mexico’s tuna. And we also learned that President Clinton and VP Gore were not as pro-conservation as once perceived. The Makah were a group of Indians applying for an aboriginal license to resume the hunting of the Grey whale. Unlike some of the Eskimo’s who have to hunt to maintain their survival, the Makah voluntarily gave up hunting of whales since the tribe no longer needed it. A license again was granted by the Clinton administration, and the Makah took every advantage. When the day for the hunt came the Makah equipped themselves with high-speed pursuit boats; the coast guard gave them 50 caliber rifles and they headed straight for a marine sanctuary with the coast guard escort. They successfully killed a Grey whale using the type of rifle that the U.S. Rangers use to take out tanks from long distances.Instead of us giving the presentation we had a guest speaker who had video footage to show the class.
