dn’t let what happen to them in the war ever happen again. By joining the U.N. they would gain many western world ties. It never hurts to have some extra friends. After the war the pillars crumbled. The Catholic pillar fell most dramatically. Soon after many pillars began to merge. The CDA took the place of the Catholics and the Calvinists and still does exist today. I believe people looked to their pillars for protection and support but when the Germans were able to occupy their country for five years the people lost faith in their pillars. This lack of faith is why they aren’t as stressed today as they were fifty years ago.5.During the 18th century the main focus on foreign policy was international law, enforceable contracts, and commercial procedures. During the 19th century their main policy issue seemed to be to stay neutral, some authors call the Netherlands the “peace laboratory”. For the past half century Dutch foreign policy has been that of NATO. Joining in NATO gave Holland the protection that was needed from their neighboring countries. ...
