and readily available. People like me who live an hour and a half away or more are not going to drive home on Election Day just to vote then come back to school. Also, nearing elections days, publications are not handed out enough. The only information I ever see is on Nader and the Green Party. And for the most part, people dont pay attention to that. Furthermore, another factor in not voting is the weather. Some might not like to drive or be too lazy to drive in bad weather. Or, simply might not even have transportation to the polls. Even another reason could be time. I am taking eighteen credits next semester and probably will not have much free time on my hands. If this is the case, what about all the other people in this position during elections? There are just too many things they have to do that are more important to them before they get in the car and go vote. Additionally, the main source we get our information about candidates is TV. Every single commercial on is negative and gives us a bad image of politics or desensitizes us to the point where we ignore politics. Lastly, in the last election Bush won without the majority vote, which shows that many votes didnt count. This could turn away many young voters who already believed that.There are ways to change this trend of young people not voting. One that I think can help a great deal would be making absentee ballots more easily available to students. Schools could make sure every student receives one, just in case they cant make it home to vote. If this took effect, Id bet the majority of people would take the tree minutes it takes to fill it out and drop it in the mail because its not out of their way and doesnt seem difficult. Another idea that I feel would greatly increase voter turnout would be hold Election Day on a Saturday.
