The problem the recordcompanies have is that there is no way of regulatingwho has access to the information, and hence no way ofprofiting from it. It is obvious here, that the recordcompanies and a scared panic have seen Napster as aneasy scapegoat and have tried to show it in a negativelight so that Napster will not benefit from them anylonger.But that is just the views of the major Record labelsand music industry players, Other artists and recordlabels have responded to the advent of Napster andsimilar applications in a more positive way, embracingthe new technology rather than rejecting it. On theirwebsite, the Offspring says "MP3 technology andprograms such as Napster are a vital and necessarymeans to promote music and foster better relationshipswith our fans." Interestingly enough, the Offspring'slast album, Americana, was made available onlineillegally before commercially released, yet it is theband's best-selling album to date. Furthermore, anumber of surveys have proven that Napster usersactually buy more CDs, after 'sampling' the songsonline. These are the ones who believe that the majormusic players are just afraid to lose a dollar andthat we can see who the real sell outs are becausethey will be the first ones to accuse Napster justbecause of a little hard times.So this shows that through Burke's lens, we usesymbols, that being the way that different groups areportraying Napster right now.
