Hawaii

Hawaii is a state that attracts tourists because of its history, geography, entertainment, and culture. It is well known for its volcanoes, beaches, and climate. Forthese reasons, tourism is the main thing Hawaii is known for.Hawaii was recordivly discovered on January 18, 1778, by 2 explorers, JamesCook and Captain Clerke. They went to the shore of Kealakekua Bay, where they weregreeted by cheering natives. Later, a native stole one of their boats, so Cook and somemarines were going to take the king hostage. The king didn’t object to this, but thenatives did. There was a brief battle, but by the end of it, Cook was dead, (The Antarctic*http://www.south-pole.com/p0000071.htm*).The King of Hawaii was King Kamehameha. The year was 1810. Hawaiian chiefsfrom the islands Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Hawaii, vowed their alliance to him.When Cook discovered Hawaii, map-makers began putting Hawaii on maps. The badthing was, with new people, came new disease. The Black Plague that had sweptthrough Europe was brought over to Hawaii and the one million people who occupiedHawaii, went down to three hundred thousand. Many other viruses or colds that werenot bad on the other continents, were devastating to the people on Hawaii.When King Kamehameha died in May of 1819, the people of Hawaii didn’t knowwhat to do. They had spent many years with a king as their form of government, andsuddenly they didn’t have anything. Many countries tried to take control of the islands,by building schools and churches, and also farming. In 1900, America made Hawaii aterritory of the United States.A big surprise came on December 7, 1941. A surprise attack on Hawaii’s PearlHarbor from the Japanese devastated that part of Hawaii. Many people had to start allover, because of this movement as a result from World War II.
