sms is Repression.Repression pushes the problem to the subconscious. It isthe exclusion of impulses and thoughts from the consciousmind. Next comes Denial, and denial is the cutting of theconscious mind from external threats. An example of thiswould be when you are walking in the mall with yourgirlfriend and a beautiful woman walks by and you look butwhen your girlfriend asks you say, "I wasn't looking at her."Next there is a defense mechanism called Sublimationwhich is the changing of bad behavior and impulses intosocially acceptable behavior and impulses. One example ofthis could be playing football for a scholarship in order togo to college. Another defense mechanism is ReactionFormation which is a development of behavior opposite ofthat which brings you anxiety. Somebody saying that theyhate homosexuals would be a clear example of this defensemechanism. The next mechanism is called Projection whichis when the unconscious attribution of your thoughts andfeelings is brought onto others. Finding flaws in others is agood example of Projection. Displacement is the nextdefense mechanism, and this is when an urge is placed ontoanother object. Taking out anger onto others when youreally should be mad at yourself. Last but not least is thedefense mechanism of Rationalization which is giving agood reason in place of the true reason. A great example ofthis would be when a person fails a test and they blame iton work, or some other corny reason instead of saying thatthey were to lazy to study. With all the different defensemechanisms of the ego I feel that we use all of them sometime or another in order to hide our true instincts.
