The Maze

The movie the maze, was about the life of William Kuralek, and the mental problems he suffered. However, at first Kuralek did not believe that he was mental. He just wanted to be viewed as a “special creature”. He had an extreme feeling of unreality, and felt he always needed more sleep. He found that painting pictures to help express his feelings could help ease his pain. From the time he was a little boy, he had problems with his father and mother. His father felt that he wasn’t manly enough. Kuralek was always artistic and displayed odd behavior to his father, such as playing with dolls. This was totally the opposite of what his dad was. His dad was a “hard and ambitious” farm worker. His mother was very strict and not very sentimental or affectionate. Neither of his parents was very supportive of his artwork, especially his father who wanted him to go to school and study medicine so he could become a doctor. All of these factors made Kuralek feel like a misfit. He felt that the world was a “hostile place”. He had extreme bitterness inside of him and began to contemplate suicide. He felt that society had rejected him, and that life in this cruel world and death, were not much different from each other. These feelings of utter abandonment led him to attempt suicide. He was sent to a hospital, where they performed shock therapy on him. He said this felt “like going to the execution chamber”. To help cope with all this, Kuralek began to pray. He discovered that he was going through a spiritual crisis. Soon after he realized this, he became a Catholic. Then Kuralek did something extremely odd. He asked his psychologist to marry him (as a gratitude for helping him). She felt that he was asking her this because of his lack of affection from his mother.
