The Maze

been a doctor or a lawyer, he is a little more supportive now. In the movie, one model of treatment that was used was electric shock therapy. This method was highly ineffective. I don’t see how a method of treatment that makes a patient feel as if they are going into an execution chamber could ever be effective. By making someone who is suicidal already feel as if they are getting executed, it is further adding to the problem rather than helping the situation. I don’t really understand why this method was even chosen for William Kuralek in the first place, and I hope the hospital that he was in has learned from their mistakes.In William’s case, I feel the best model of treatment would have just been counseling. Kuralek needed someone to listen to him, just someone for him to get everything off his chest. He had a lot going on inside him, and he could have used some guidance in making sense of all of it. Obviously he wanted to express what was going on with him, which is why he painted to help express his feelings. It must be extremely hard for a person with little or no support from his family to express himself in any way. The nurse who he asked to marry obviously was doing a good job of listening to him, but there should have been more attention paid to his relationship with this nurse and how positive his reaction was to her help. I also feel that some medication would have been beneficial to him. I’m sure that he probably was given some, however from what I got from the film, they didn’t touch upon it much. With the proper counseling and medication, William might have come to his religious realization earlier, and saved himself and others valuable time. ...
