at they want start out like this:The freedoms of thought and expression count among our most fundamental and cherished rights and promote both individual welfare and the common good in a democratic state. Historically, however, unbelievers such as secular humanists, atheists, agnostics, rationalists, and freethinkers have faced prejudice, intolerance, and discrimination for their opinions and discoveries. In the firm conviction that the principle of church-state separation guarantees the equal rights of the religious and non-religious, we the Campus Freethought Alliance. hereby present the following Bill of Rights for Unbelievers. The document basically then states the rights unbelievers want granted to them to try and block the restrictions and discriminations placed on them for having a label. These rights include the right to freely express their views and allow them to perform their own legally binding ceremonies, such as marriage. Sometimes judges advise juvenile offenders to attend church for periods of months or years. Such sentences are not intended as punishment. Because the judge assumes that religious training and commitment produce moral character, he assumes such attendance may lead to repentance and reform. Clergymen largely support this position. Religious leaders traditionally blame rising crime and immorality on a decline in religious conviction, and many argue that religious commitment is the only secure basis for moral behavior. Such notions are congruent with the social scientific view that religious sanctioning systems play an important role in ensuring and maintaining conformity to social norms. Drawing heavily on the work of Emile Durkheim, the way in which religion performs this role is usually summarized as follows: (1) through its belief system religion legitimates social and individual values; (2) through its rituals it reinforces commitment to these values; (3) through its system of eternal rewards and punish...
