nd less paid. This story begins with Luis Pie and he is describing how he had stepped on a rusty metal stick while working on a sugar plantation. He explains to us how he was trying to get home but the fever and the aches were slowing him down, until a point he could not walk and had to try to crawl his way to the road. After hours of crawling he heard a Ford truck pass by who was own by one of the plantation owners. Luis sees when he throws a match into the plantation but the match did not turn off, instead it started creating a fire. Luis started to crawl faster only thinking that if he does not make it home nobody would feed his three children. After a while he hears some people coming so he starts screaming for help, when they finally find him they blame him for the fire since he was carrying a box of matches with him, but he could not explain because he did not know the language. At the end they decided to kill him for being a trader, but the one given the job of killing him forgives him, because he sees the pain Luis Pie is going threw. The theme of worker and owner relationship comes out in almost every story and if it does not, then he talks of other aspects of poverty and hardships of living in his native country.All the stories take place in the Dominican Republic, where he lived or saw most of the experiences he writes about in this book. Juan Bosch take us away from the negative, unjust portrayal that has traditionally been ascribed to the typical Dominican campesino given by the middle and upper class. This a great book, very entertaining and even thought it may be considered a fiction book all the stories could of happen and might be happening right now. They are all very easy to understand and very moving. I immediately got involved in the book, and felt love and compassion for all those poor people out there.
