Despite occasional repetition and despite Bosch’s occasional moralizing, he has managed to convert David into a contemporary figure, chronicling all the intrigues and subtle maneuvers he employed to achieve and maintain power, vividly describing his moments of glory and failure. Cuentos: Casa de las Americas, was the collection of short-stories written by Juan Bosch that I choose to read for this assignment. At first I was afraid that I was not going to like it because it was in Spanish and I had never read any of his work before, but I decided to give it a chance. The first night I checked out the book from the library, I put it on my night table to remember to read at night, when I got home I turned on the television but nothing was on so I decided to pick up the book. As I opened it and turned the pages I was thinking that it was going to be a long and boring process. Finally, I started reading and since the first sentences till the last it had me intrigued of what was going to happen next. I love every single short-story in that book, but my favorite has to be Los Amos, because it gives us a reality check to remember not to treat people under us with mistreatment and unfriendly words. This people are people like us and should be treated with respect and admiration for doing what they do day after day. I also enjoy the way he writes with such simplicity, it was real easy to understand and to follow along. It is true what one the critics said, that Bosch are often less concerned with character development than with plot. That many characters are anonymous. After reading this story I could relate to what Olmos was saying about Bosch’s writing. I realized that I had been judging a book by it’s cover, but once I gave it a chance I realized I was wrong.
