m that the United States was working on a new weapon of unusual destructive force. (Blow 90) When president Truman first came into office he was not only faced with the decision of whether he should or should not drop the bomb but he was also thinking about the Russians .Shortly after the bombing of Hiroshima ,on September 11,1945,Stimson told Truman : I consider the problem of our satisfactory relations with Russia as not merely connected but as virtually dominated by the problem of the atomic bomb . Secretary of State Byrnes calculated that our possessing and demonstrating the bomb would make the Russians more manageable in Europe.(Takaki 7)The Japanese would of surrendered even if the United States wouldnt of dropped the bomb, but because the United States was so eager to detonate the bomb and end the war as soon as possible President Truman wanted to give the Japanese only little chance to surrender. In effect, the decision to drop the bomb without warning had been confirmed by the president and the military.( Wyden 174) The United States continued to push on in their efforts to put an end to the war throughthe atomic bomb. The United States never looked ahead to the facts telling the amount of casualties that would occur because of the bomb. The estimated amount of deaths the atomic bomb caused are between 70,000 and 150,000.(Kurzman 423) Japanese popular and official opinion estimated that , . . .prior to 31 December 1945,and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945,Japan would of surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not have been dropped,even if Russia had not entered the war ,and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.(Feis 265)Dropping the atomic bomb was the only efficient way to put an end to the war.The bomb was used in fact to shorten the war.
