In 1931, Enzo was granted a legitimate son, named Alfredino, Alfredo for short, after Enzo’s father (“Biography” np). Enzo Ferrari decided that racing was too dangerous, and he retired from racing. This allowed him to put all his time into coaching his racecar drivers (np).As with any company, a logo or emblem is desired for ease of publicity. The black prancing horse was adopted in 1947 as Ferrari’s emblem. The prancing horse first appeared on the hood of a 125 driven by Franco Cortese on May 11, 1947 at the Rome Grand Prix (“History” np). The story behind the prancing horse is one of sincere honor due to Francesco Baracca (“Official” np). This horse had been painted on the fuselage belonging to this fighter pilot of World War I. He was a heroic pilot of Italy who died on Mount Montello, and he had been the Italian Ace of all Aces during the Great War. In 1923, when Enzo Ferrari won the First Savio Circuit ran in Ravenna, Italy, he had the privilege of meeting Francesco Baracca’s parents. Count Enrico Baracca and Countess Paolina related the story of their son to young Enzo. The Countess said, “Ferrari, why don’t you put my son’s prancing horse on your cars; it would bring you luck” (qtd. in “Official” np).Ferrari was not a company that went unnoticed. Ford attempted to buy Ferrari in 1963 for eighteen million dollars. If Enzo Ferrari was allowed to run the racing division for Ford, then he would concede to the deal.
