s cyclical. The Great Depression is a good example of this. The nation was in an economic bad time, but it came back to a good economy. The shortage of food has an effect on people not being able to afford the basics of food, clothing and shelter. This is usually the case in agricultural areas. The fourth type of poverty, case, refers to people who cannot support themselves without outside help. This group usually includes elderly people, children in fatherless families and the disabled. Also included in case poverty are alcoholics and drug addicts. They have a hard time coping with everyday life. They can't cope with finding and keeping jobs.(Compton's Reference Collection).You can't put a description on poverty. It could be your friend, neighbor or relative. All it takes is a crisis and a family can fall below the poverty line. Anyone can fall victim to poverty, including some women. Many women are dependent on men for income. Women are paid less than men. Single women and mothers have a high poverty rate. Many more women are having children without being married. The rate of women in poverty has fallen but not as much as hoped. Some women will quit their job to marry and have children to raise. With the divorce rate rising, women are forced to go back to work to support their children. Many will apply for welfare and that will be enough to get by to be able to stay at home with the children. Fifty-four percent of the people in poverty are in household headed by a single mother.(Poverty 51). There are more than just whites in poverty.Blacks and Hispanics have the highest poverty rate compared to other groups. Twenty-five percent of these minorities compared to eight percent of the white population. Nothing compares with the poverty the Native Americans face.
