Of the Native American population, only twenty percent have indoor plumbing. There are even less Native Americans who have electricity. (Compton's Reference Collection).The United States is considered to be one of the richest in the world, with a high standard of living. But there are still millions of Americans who struggle each day to get by on the bare minimums. Many people in America work hard, long hours and still struggle to make ends meet. Urban areas have seen a rise in poverty while rural areas are decreasing. The price of corn and livestock falling has contributed to the poverty rates in rural America. The government is trying to offer incentives to employers to locate in rural areas to increase employment opportunities.Many people think that being unemployed will lead to problems with alcohol and since that is where all the money will be spent, the will to work will decrease. It is hard to find and keep a job with a drug or alcohol problem. It is hard for people who are doing well and not living in poverty, to imagine a day being poor. They struggle to with finding jobs, finding shelter and having enough food to feed their families. The poor get sick more often and this leads to them dying at a younger age for lack of medical attention.(Poverty 41). The well fare system is one the government helps out people.The welfare system today has hundreds of state and federal programs to help all types of poverty. There is Medicare to help with illnesses, unemployment insurance to help with a job loss, Social Security to aid the elderly and disabled and Worker's Compensation to assist people who are hurt on the job.
