e stationed in a swampy region of the San Diego area that is inhabited by mosquitoes. The study documented the effects a 40% concentration of Deet insect repellant had on the soldiers. 90% of the soldiers surveyed suffered from irritant dermatitis, or a skin rash only 2 hours after application of the toxicant. The findings of the study are significant because it made the use of Deet during military service an occupational hazard of enlistment; and protected soldiers under OSHEA. Conclusions and RecommendationsSince its development over fifty years ago, Deet has played a critical role in establishing comfort ability for the average American in various outdoor activities. As with most pesticides, the improper usage of the chemical can cause severe impacts o both DEET 9humans and the natural world. Never the less, the development of this toxicant has invariably saved lives; as its function deters the spread of infectious airborne diseases. Deet has been extensively analyzed in comparison with many other insect repellants. The dangers of using chemical pesticides have been revealed since Rachel Carsen’s thought provoking book, Silent Spring. In order to further discern the toxicity of Deet it should be recommended that the chemical be analyzed for long-term effects on the environment and Human health. A toxicant may not reveal its full force until it has been left to fester for extended periods of time. Since Deet has only been in existence for half a century its full long-term effects have yet to be ascertained. It is because Deet is a relatively new chemical that it should be recommended that further study of the toxicant be conducted in the near and not so near future. This study or series of studies should first investigate the reprocutions the chemical may have on the Human body. Other organism’s reactions should also be examined in order to discover how human use of Deet products could influence other non-human societal age...
