Death of a Salesman and a Raison in the Sun

ately decides he is leaving and never coming home. Shortly after, Willy successfully attempts suicide.The ending is also quite different in the two plays. Although Walter loses the insurance money, the family all pulls together and unites. They move into a newer and nicer house, and when the play ends, the reader has a sense that it is ultimately going to be alright. It seems as though everything is finally coming together. They realize that there is no need to live their lives around material objects. However in Death of a Salesman, Willy takes his own life. Their family is obviously not as strong, as the Younger family is in A Raisin in the Sun. The reader does not get the sense that things are going to work out in Death of a Salesman, instead the feeling is more that misery will be coming for the next few years in that family. Both plays focus on achieving the American dream and how the desire can eventually lead to ones downfall. However, in A Raisin in the Sun, the importance and role of family helped them get through it, while in Death of a Salesman, the role of family, leads even more to Willys downfall.The role of woman is also approached differently in the two plays(Laban, pg 9). A Raisin in the Sun shows the rise of feminism. Beneatha has dreams to go somewhere; she desires to be a doctor. She plans on fulfilling this dream by studying hard and attending school. At one point her and Lena get into a conversation about it. When Beneatha says she is going to be a doctor, Lena replies by saying Course youre going to be a doctor, honey. God willin (Hansberry, pg 75). This comment upsets Beneatha and she explains that in her eyes God doesnt have anything to do with. She feels like God should not receive credit for what she accomplishes. This shows that Beneatha is a woman who feels that she is going to get somewhere because of what she accomplishes.Although Ruth is not the same way, her relationship with Walter is extremely differen...
