Auschiwitz Revisted

P-38s and Mosquitos that were available at the time. Each of these plans may have been used, but each had extensive drawbacks to launching an attack on Auschwitz. All of this information compiled together lead Kitchens to conclude in his article that is was in fact operational limits that led to the Allies failure to bomb Auschwitz. Kitchens article is very convincing for a number of reasons. The first being his organization of the article itself. Kitchens does not merely give the reader his point of view, but instead goes into great detail to explain the oppositions point of view. This gives his argument that much more credibility. He is able to thoroughly explain the other point of view and then is able to show the reader the flaws in the oppositions arguments. This ability to thoroughly explain the oppositions argument shows that Kitchens did a great deal of research in preparing to write this article. He not only went through the research to try to prove his own point of view, but went back through decades of material to investigate how the bombing theory was developed and took root in the United States. Also, the numerous sources that Kitchen uses are well documented with extensive footnotes. These footnotes not only give the reader the names and authors of the works, but also go into great detail to explain the pertinent points in the works that are cited. This is very helpful for the reader because it gives the reader extra insight into these other works. This work I found to be very valuable to students. As a student in 2002 it is very easy to look back at WWII and ask why the Allies did not try to shut down the concentration camps? Now, almost sixty years later, the world knows the horrors that took place at these camps and we wonder why they were not stopped. This article does an excellent job at answering those questions.
