It is defined as the prescribed use of music and music-related strategies, by a qualified music therapist, to assist or motivate a person towards specific, non-musical goals. Music therapists use their training as musicians, clinicians, and researchers to effect changes in cognitive, physical, communication, social, and emotional skills (Brunk/Coleman 1). Music therapists use music to promote insight to problems that are approached in therapy. In music therapy the exploration of songs, lyrics and the implications in our daily lives are used to restore or increase a person's social, physical or mental well being. Listening with new attention to sounds and learning to use music as a ground for peace and health is how empowerment and inner health can be strengthened and restored (Martin 1).Other methods for relieving stress with music are by listening to harp music, classical music or just by simply listening to soft, calm music. This type of music is usually found in elevators, airports, restaurant or even hospitals. Any music that is relaxing and soothing will ease stress and calm a person down. Everyone knows that when a slow song comes on the radio we tend to drive slower. In big cities the radio stations play calmer music than in the country. Why do you think that elevators, airports and hospitals play such calm and soothing music? It is to calm or try to ease the persons fears of those places. Can you imagine if you stepped into an elevator and you heard Marilyn Manson? I think I would be a nut case when I got out!
