THE REFORMATION

John Calvin was an educated lawyer, humanist, theologian, and he was full of Christianity. He believed you had to be pure. Man was born with a sinful nature, and man is born bad. The scriptures offer redemption and, school offers discipline. First learn the scriptures, and secondly whip the devil out of them. He believed in universal education at elementary level. Compulsory education you must attend school so that you could be educated. He believed in a theocratic government. The Church and State were one. Secondary education was for the brightest middle and high-class children. John Jakes Rousseau(1712-1778) was born in Geneva Switzerland next to France. He ran away from Switzerland and went to Paris were they were having essay commutations. He won and that made him famous. He lived with a widow as his lover, but soon grew restless and left for Europe. When he retuned to her he found her with another. He was devastated and went and found a servant girl. He had five children with her that he took to hospital and left them there. Rousseau believed in social contract, democratic life, equality, consent, and individual rights. He wrote a book called Emile, the book describe as the education of a boy in his natural setting. He believed a natural goodness of man is corrupted by society. A child should be removed form society and educated in the country. Book 1 was Infancy, the tutor is responsible for the child, and the tutor insures that the child acquires good habits. Book 2 was childhood, the aim was to develop the natural facilities of the child through enfoldment. Expose them to nature, take them for nature walks, animals, rain and snow. Observe nature and provide natural activities. Book 3 was on youth, this was to develop the aim of intellect. Provide experiences from nature.
